An Introduction to
Deep Tissue Massage
In the bodywork technique known as deep tissue massage, the therapist will target chronic tension in the deeper layers of tissue in the body.
It is a muscle-specific modality that involves slow strokes, and direct pressure or friction movements. Unlike Swedish massage, which may reach only the few top layers of muscles, deep tissue massage will reach down through all five layers of muscle. Massage therapists will use their fingers, thumbs or occasionally even elbows to apply the needed pressure.
Deep Tissue Massage is a highly effective method for releasing chronic pain and stress in muscles that are over-used or have had past injuries.
Though there should be no pain to the client during the session, soreness is often common for them for a few days.
