An Introduction to
Effleurage Massage

The Effleurage movement is a primary stroke in massage therapy. It is generally used at the beginning and at the end of a session, or to connect various stages of the massage treatment since the therapist should remain in contact with the client at all times.

Effleurage is a French word that means "to stroke" or "to touch lightly." The technique consists of stroking or gliding movements which are performed with the whole hand in contact with the client's skin and with the fingers kept close together. A full body Swedish massage session can be performed using only this stroke.
